What PPF is, and isn't
Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, clear polyurethane film applied over a panel, not a chemical coating. Because it has real physical thickness, it's the option that can absorb an actual stone impact rather than just resisting UV or chemical etching. Higher-end PPF products are also formulated to be self-healing, a property studied directly in polyurethane-film research (self-healing waterborne polyurethane film study, PubMed (opens in a new tab)): light scratches and swirl marks can flow shut when the film is warmed.
PPF isn't a substitute for what a ceramic coating does. A ceramic coating adds deep gloss, makes the surface hydrophobic and easier to wash, and protects against UV fade and chemical etching, none of which are film's main job. That's exactly why the two are commonly combined: film absorbs the impacts, and a ceramic topcoat over it restores the gloss and easy-wash benefit that film alone doesn't give you.
How it works with our partner
J-Bros doesn't install PPF ourselves. We arrange it through our trusted Gold Coast partner, so your car gets a properly fitted film without us stretching into a specialty we don't practise day to day. Here's the honest rundown of how it works:
-
You get a quote from us for the coverage you want, using the form below or a call.
-
We coordinate with our partner on the job and confirm the details with you.
-
The partner fits the film, professionally and to a proper standard.
-
Optional ceramic topcoat. If you want it, we apply a ceramic coating back at our own Burleigh Waters workshop once the film is on, for extra gloss and easier washing.
Every detail beyond that, exact scheduling and drop-off logistics, gets confirmed with your quote, because it depends on the coverage you choose and our partner's own booking.
Coverage options
PPF coverage generally comes in a few shapes, and our partner confirms exactly what's available for your car at quote time:
- Front-end or high-impact areas: the bonnet, front guards, mirrors and A-pillars, the panels that take the brunt of stone-chip exposure on a daily commute.
- Full panels: extending coverage to doors, rear guards or other individual panels beyond the front end.
- Full car: the entire body wrapped in film.
There's no fixed price list here. PPF is arranged through our partner and quoted per vehicle, so treat the categories above as general shape, not a menu, and get the specifics with your quote.
PPF and ceramic coating together
PPF and ceramic coating solve different problems, and plenty of owners run both. Film absorbs the stone chips and light impacts ceramic simply can't cushion against; ceramic adds the gloss, UV resistance and easy-wash behaviour that plain film doesn't deliver on its own. If your car already has PPF fitted, in good condition, we can apply a ceramic coating over it at our Burleigh Waters workshop the same way we coat any other panel. Ceramic coating remains our own in-house paint-protection service and the one we lead with for most Gold Coast daily drivers; PPF is what we arrange through our partner specifically for the stone-chip and impact side of things.
Care after PPF
A few habits keep freshly fitted film looking its best. Stick to a hand wash rather than a brush-style automatic car wash for the first few weeks while the film fully cures. Keep a high-pressure wash wand well back from the film's edges rather than blasting straight at them, since that's where lifting is most likely to start. And if your film is a self-healing type, light swirl marks will often flow shut on their own with warmth, direct sun or a warm-water rinse, so there's usually no need to polish directly on the film.
Common questions
Does J-Bros install PPF ourselves?
No. Ceramic coating is our in-house paint-protection service, applied at our own Burleigh Waters workshop, and PPF is something we arrange through our trusted Gold Coast partner rather than fit ourselves. We coordinate the quote and the job, and the partner fits the film.
How much does PPF cost?
It's quoted per vehicle. Coverage, panel size and your car's shape all move the figure, so there's no fixed price list here: tell us what you want covered and we'll get you a real number rather than a rough guess.
What's the warranty on PPF?
It's the film manufacturer's warranty, confirmed with your quote. The exact terms depend on the film and coverage chosen, and they sit alongside your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Can I get ceramic coating over the PPF?
Yes, and it's a common combination. PPF absorbs stone chips and light impacts; a ceramic topcoat over it adds gloss, UV resistance and easier washing. If your film is already fitted and in good condition, we can apply the ceramic coating over it back at our Burleigh Waters workshop. See our full ceramic coating page for what that service includes.
How long does the PPF install take?
It depends on the coverage you choose and our partner's schedule, so we confirm a real timeframe with your quote rather than quoting a figure that might not hold for your car.
Do I need to drop my car off somewhere, or does J-Bros come to me?
Because the film is fitted by our partner, the drop-off and scheduling details are confirmed with your quote. We coordinate the arrangement on your behalf so you're not left to sort the handover yourself.
Does PPF turn yellow or peel over time?
Modern PPF is a UV-stable clear polyurethane film, and yellowing or peeling is unusual within a film's warranty period when it's properly fitted and cared for. The specific warranty terms for your film are confirmed with your quote, not published here as a general claim.
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
Neither is strictly better: they solve different problems. PPF absorbs stone chips and impacts; ceramic coating adds gloss, UV resistance and easier washing, and is J-Bros' main in-house service. See our full ceramic coating vs PPF comparison for the honest breakdown.
